Your Local Visibility Checklist

Everything from the workshop, stripped back to what to actually do. Work through it from top to bottom.

Start with Relevance. That's where the fastest wins are.

1 Relevance: tell Google what you do

1. Categories

  • Set your primary category to the exact thing you want to be found for. Not close, exact.
  • Add every relevant secondary category.

2. Description

750 characters

You have 750 characters. Use them.

  • Your business name
  • Where you're based and the suburbs you serve. Name them.
  • Every service you provide
  • Trust proof such as guarantees, jobs completed, years in business, licences and insurance

3. Services

List every service as its own separate item. Fill in the description under every service. Most businesses leave these blank.

  • Explain what the service is.
  • Mention relevant products or brands.
  • Explain who it is for.
  • Mention where you provide it.

4. Posts

The four-part posting formula

01 Use a real photo every time. Never stock photography.
02 Write a one-line description of what you did and where.
03 Add the details: what you did, products or brands used, who it was for and suburbs covered.
04 Finish with one simple next step: call, visit, enquire or book.

5. Reviews

  • Reply to your reviews using the service you provided and the area where appropriate.
"Thanks [name] for [job]. Next time you need a [service] in [area], give us a call."

2 Proximity: tell Google where you work

Important Warning

Never change or fake your address. Doing this can put your Google Business Profile at risk of suspension.

  • Fill all 20 service-area slots.
  • If you run out of nearby suburbs, add relevant areas further out.
  • Name your suburbs in your business description.
  • Name your suburbs in your service descriptions.
  • Name your suburbs in your posts.
  • Keep naming your service areas consistently.

3 Trust: show Google you can be counted on

  • Get reviews coming in steadily. Make asking for a review part of every completed job.
  • Reply to every review, good and bad.
  • Post at least once a week.
  • Keep adding fresh, real photos.

Consistency matters.

Fresh and steady beats doing a huge amount once and then leaving the profile untouched. Keep your profile accurate, current and consistently maintained.

4 Advanced

Only focus on these once everything above has been done properly and is being maintained consistently.

  • Web citations
  • Relevant directories
  • Area-specific pages on your website
  • Keeping up with Google's changes

The advanced tactics become harder, take more time and generally only make sense once the fundamentals are in place.

Want to take it further?
